The School Act, Chapter 6 a: practical guide for school leaders
Cosafe’s Maria Elmér guides you what Education Act Chapter 6a actually means in practice
Cosafes' Maria Elmér conducted a webinar that clarifies what Chapter 6a of the Education Act actually means in practice, for principals, principals, teachers and others who come across this in their everyday lives. The webinar can of course be watched afterwards. Here is a brief summary of what you can hear and see more of in the webinar. Chapter 6a is about school security work for crime prevention purposes and applies from 1 July 2025. It may feel big and perhaps even overwhelming, but the basic idea is that security and study peace should not be based on luck, but on planning, responsibility and practice. What is Chapter 6a of the Education Act about? Chapter 6 a deals with the school's crime prevention security work, and in simplified terms it can be seen as four parts that should be interconnected: * Preparedness for serious violent situations or threats of such * Access – that unauthorized persons are not given access when the activity is in progress * Bags and other objects – can in some cases be examined/handled, but under clear conditions * Police report in case of suspicion of a crime in connection with the activity, with the exception of when there are overriding reasons against it And yes, it is clear that it may feel like a lot, but that does not mean that everything has to be done tomorrow. It means that the work needs to be systematic, known and practiced.
