Irina Jurenka works at the intersection of AI, learning, and education, with a focus not only on what AI can do today, but on where the technology is heading next and she will give an overview on what tha fast paced AI-development will mean for schools and society. Google DeepMind is actively developing AI to fundamentally improve learning outcomes for every student, with the core goal of moving beyond simple helpfulness to enact sound pedagogical practices. The team addresses the complex challenge of creating an effective AI tutor – a task considered harder than mastering the game of Go – by pioneering an approach called ”pedagogical instruction following.” Exploratory studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that the resulting purpose-built model, LearnLM, improves students’ independent problem-solving skills.
